Operation Safety Of Lawn Mower

Lawn Mower - Safety For Children

Lawn mowers really have the potential to do great harm to the body. Nearly 75,000 Americans are seriously injured in lawn mower accidents each year. About 10,000 of these injuries involve children. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend that children not operate a lawn mower until they are 16 years old. Injuries are most serious during summer season. Children’s Hospital sees the devastating effects lawn mower injuries can have on children and their parents - reconstructive surgery, long hospital stays and permanent disfigurement and disability.

Children should never ride as a passenger on a lawn mower. It may seem like fun for kids to co-pilot the riding mower with mom and dad. However, as riding mowers are not designed for two persons, children on riding mowers have the potential to fall and be run over by the mower, resulting in serious injury or amputation of the extremities. In most accidents parents admit their ignorance of the dangers involving child on riding mower. Some are not even aware that having a child in the yard while they’re cutting the lawn was dangerous.

Lawn Mower - Safety For Adults

Adults operating lawn mowers are just as much at risk for injuries as their children. Adult should wear protective gear including pants, steel-toed boots, goggles and ear protection, excluding portable music players. Make sure all debris (rocks, sticks and toys) are removed from the yard before you begin mowing. Loose objects can project out of the lawn mower and cause serious injury. On slopes or steep hills, riding mowers have the potential to tip or roll over, which can result in serious injury.

With more than 22 percent of lawn mower injuries involving the hand, fingers or wrist, it is only safe to make sure that the engine is off and mower blade completely stopped rotating before attempting to remove debris from the mower or make adjustments to it.

Lawn Care Equipment And Air Pollution

Why Biodiesel Lawn Mower

Pollution from lawn mowers and lawn care equipment is a big problem. In America alone there are over 25 million acres of lawn. To maintain these lawns, more than 89 million small gasoline engines are deployed. Each weekend 54 million people mow their lawns burning 800 million gallons of gasoline a year. A single gasoline lawn mower could create more pollution than 73 new cars. Operating a lawn mower one hour could create the same pollution levels as driving a new automobile 340 miles. It is estimated that 5% of America’s pollution comes from lawn care equipment. In major cities, single day air pollution from lawn equipment exceeds the total emissions from all planes in the city airport.

The reason for lawn mower to be in such a big pollution problem is that gas-powered small engines are not equipped with the same pollution controlling devices that are installed in automobiles. Tailpipe emissions from automobiles have been regulated in one form or another for decades. Not so with lawn care equipment. Until just a few years ago, the patchwork of small engine pollution regulations which has sprung up around the United States did not exist.

Biodiesel Lawn Mower Availability

The good news is in the next few years we can begin seeing more rigorous environmental standards for lawn and garden equipment. Toro, a leading brand in lawn mower, has introduced biodiesel-ready mowers and hydrogen fuel cell utility vehicle in 2007, after many years of testing everything from soybean oils to French fry grease as fuels. Toro also offers diesel-to-biodiesel conversion kits ranging from $30 to $500. Biodiesel-ready equipment runs on 20 percent vegetable oil and 80 percent petroleum. By 2009, mower running solely on biodiesel fuel could be on the market.

Besides going for biodiesel lawn mower, lawn owners can also help solve pollution by reducing the amount of lawn in the yard. One example is to create different types of flowerbeds and garden paths using a variety of materials such as gravel or brick or even just fieldstone or mulch. Not only does this reduce the lawn, it also gives home owners more opportunities to create beautiful flowerbeds and garden paths. However, it really goes beyond the beauty of these flowers, it’s about the environment.
